Dr. Spiegel, a respected and accomplished orthopaedist who, among many achievements, established an orthopaedic surgery department at the University of South Florida in 1981 and founded the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in 1988. His vision was for the physicians at FOI to engage in research and other academic pursuits in order to make themselves better clinicians and surgeons. He knew that participation in research would allow the physicians to remain on the cutting edge of medicine and give them the tools to investigate the challenges that present themselves in the clinic or operating room. The FOI physicians, many of whom are the top opinion leaders in their subspecialties, recognized that in order to pursue research, they needed to establish a separate research foundation.

Ten years after the establishment of the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) in 1999, we have produced nearly 150 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed literature, presented research findings at national and international meetings, and educated hundreds of surgeons at Continuing Medical Education conferences.
