Program Details/Organization Description
The Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education Hand Fellowship Program is closely aligned with Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI), the largest orthopaedic group in the state of Florida. The goal of the program is to improve fellow's performance in a diverse programming covering all aspects of upper extremity surgery including pediatrics in a high volume setting. The model for this fellowship is a one-on-one apprenticeship with close supervision and interaction with fellowship trained attending staff. Fellows are the primary assistants to the attending staff during surgery and assist in supervising USF residents on rotation. Fellows evaluate in-house consults and both private and clinic office patients. The broad clinical experience is facilitated by close relationships with three primary institutions: Tampa General Hospital (TGH)- a level 1 Trauma Center which services Florida's west coast, Shriners Hospital for Children of Tampa- servicing inpatients under the age of 18, and Florida Orthopaedic Institute Surgery Center- a state-of-the-art facility housed on FOI's main campus exclusively serving FOI outpatients and surgeons.

Also housed on the campus is the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) which operates independently from FOI, servicing all areas of research and education. Fellows will benefit from access to a biomechanical research laboratory for testing of materials, a surgical skills laboratory for training on the latest surgical techniques using cadaveric specimens and a fully staffed team of coordinators. Fellows will play an active role in research, preparing for weekly conferences and monthly journal club meetings. Each fellow is required to complete at least one scientific paper on a subject related to the hand and/or upper extremity suitable for publication in a major journal or presentation at a national meeting. Applicants must have completed a residency in a general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, or plastic surgery program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A valid Florida medical license is required. The fellowship is ACGME accredited and participates in the match program for the 2013-2014 academic year.
